Bo and Yu Points

All Bo points are on the front of the body, in the chest and abdomen. They are also referred to as alarm points (Mu Xue) or Mu points (Jap .: Bo, Mu means collecting). Similar to the Yu points (approval points or Shu points) they activate Qi, the energy, and Xue, the blood, of the related organ systems and serve both the diagnosis and the treatment (in the TCM). In Shiatsu Bo points are not used for initial diagnosis, but can confirm this.
The Bo points can be used to influence the Qi of the function circle / meridian, with the Bo points (Mu Xue alarm points) acting more on the Yin area. The Yu points (Shu approval points), however, more on the Qi, the Yang area.

Lung 1   zhōng fŭ –  palace of the center  

Bo point Lung

location: the acupuncture point is 1 PZ below the clavicle in the depression between the pectoral and deltoid muscles

effect: supports the functional circuit of the lungs and spleen, lowers the qi pulmonale, helps with the leucorrhea, relieves pain in the thorax and upper back

Ren Mai 17  shān zhōng – center the breast

Bo point Pericard

location: on the midline of the sternum, between the nipples at the level of the 4th ICR

effect: it regulates the Qi of the Lung functional circuit and lowers opposing Qi, relaxes the upper abdomen and midsection, opens the ribcage, supports the diaphragm, tones and regulates Ki of the lungs and heart

Ren Mai 14   jù què – large palace

Bo point Heart

location: on the midline of the abdomen, on the xiphoid process of the sternum

effect: harmonizes the Qi of the cardiac function, the Qi of the functional circuit lowers stomach and colon, calms the mind, cools the heat of the heart, anxiety, manic phases, psychosis and indigestion in the upper abdomen, which are triggered by emotional tension

Ren Mai 12   zhōng wăn  – center of the stomach

Bo point Stomach

location: 4 PZ above the navel and 4 PZ below the space between the xiphoid process of the sternum and navel, exactly in the middle of the connecting line

effect: harmonizes the Qi of the digestive function, lowers its Qi, tonifies the stomach energy, removes moisture, in tiredness and dull stomach pains, which are mitigated by food and heat, lumping in the middle of the body

Liver 14    qī mén  – gate of a period

location: on the medioclavicular line between the 6th and 7th rib (6th ICR)

effect: strengthens the Qi of the functional liver, cools the blood, harmonizes liver and stomach, pain in the region of the liver, indigestion with strong stomach involvement

Gallbladder 24    rì yuè  – sun and moon

location: on the medioclavicular line between the 7th and 8th rib (7.ICR)

effect: regulating the Qi of the “middle”, conducts moist heat from the gallbladder and liver

Liver 13    zhāng mén – ornamental gate

Bo point Spleen

location: in the lateral abdominal area, just below the free end of the 11th rib

effect: the middle can be supported and harmonized, blocked Qi in the thorax of the functional circuit lung can be solved, harmonizes liver and spleen, in case of emaciation, congestion in the middle of the body and in the abdomen

Gall Bladder 25   jīng mén  – capital’s gate

Bo point Kidney

location: on the ventral side at the free, caudal end of the 12th rib

effect: for pain in the back, in the hip, the loins and in the legs, influencing the kidney function circle

Stomach 25    tiān shū – center of the heavens

Bo point Large Intestine

location: 2PZ (3 finger widths) lateral to the navel

effect: regulates and harmonizes the flow of Qi and Xue throughout the abdominal and intestinal areas, dissolving blockages, mental distress caused by a disharmony of stomach energy

Ren Mai 5    shí mén – stone gate

Bo point Triple Warmer

location: 2PZ (3 fingers wide) below the belly button

effect: strengthens the source Ki, promotes the conversion and excretion of fluids from the lower burner, radiating abdominal pains, abdominal neoplasia, diarrhea

Ren Mai 4    guān yuán – first barrier

Bo point Small Intestine

location: hand width (3 PZ) under the navel on the midline (Ren Mai)

effect: strengthens kidney function and the innate vital forces (qi originals, yuanqi) and at the same time regulates qi, especially of women, strengthens the lower burner and uterus

Ren Mai 3    zhōng jí – pole of the center

Bo point Bladder

location: on the midline of the abdomen, a thumb across the edge of the pubis

effect: gynecological disorders, e.g. General disorders of any kind, stinging abdominal pain in the vicinity of the navel

 

All Yu points (Bei Shu Xue) or Shu points (Shu means transporting) lie on the back of the body, on the bladder meridian (paramedian of the spine). According to traditional Chinese ideas, they activate Qi, the life energy, and Xue, the blood, in the associated organ systems. Due to this close relationship, the Yu points are sore in the case of disorders of the corresponding internal organ systems and are indicated in the case of diseases of the same. They serve both for diagnosis and therapy. These back – Yu – points are mainly used for chronic diseases. 

Another characteristic of the Yu points is that they are used to influence the sensory organ of the corresponding organ. They also act as local points for back pain. 

Bladder 13    fèi shù – Approval Point of the Lung

Location: 1. 5 inches lateral of the spinous process of the 3rd BWK

Sense organ: Nose

Effect: Supports all lung functions; also against exhaustion and spinal curvature

Bladder 14   jué yīn shù  – Approval for the exhausted Yin

Yu Point Pericard

Location: 1. 5 inches lateral of the spinous process of the 4th BWK

Sense organ: Tongue

Effect:  On all ailments caused by a cardiovascular disharmony; tightness of the chest, lumpy feeling in the chest and middle of the body, nausea

Bladder 15   xīn shù  – Approval of the Heart

Yu Point Heart

Location: 1. 5 inches lateral of the spinous process of the 5th BWK

Sense organ: Tongue

Effect:  Main application for mental-emotional problems; also for insomnia, anxiety in the chest, supports all functions of heart and Shen

Bladder 18   gān shù  – Approval point of the Liver

Yu Point Liver

Location: 1. 5 inches lateral of the spinous process of the 9th BWK

Sense organ: Eyes

Effect:  Stimulates the liver functions; in case of irritability, temper, compaction and hardening in the upper abdomen, as well as pain in the upper abdomen and back

Bladder 19   dăn shù  – Approval point of the Gallbladder

Yu Point Gallbladder

Location: 1. 5 inches lateral of the spinous process of the 10th BWK

Sense organ: Eyes

Effect:  Supports the gallbladder function; for digestive complaints, neuralgias in the coccyx and gallbladder pains

Bladder 20   pí shù  – Approval of the Spleen

Yu Point Spleen

Location: 1. 5 inches lateral of the spinous process of the 11th BWK

Sense organ: Mouth

Effect:  Supports all functions of the spleen energy; dissolves mucus blockages, exhaustibility, emaciation, dysentery, subluxation 10th to 12th thoracic vertebrae (according to Masunaga)

Bladder 21   wèi shù  – Approval of the Stomach

Yu Point Stomach

Location: 1. 5 inches lateral of the spinous process of the 12th BWK

Sense organ: Mouth

Effect:  Supports all functions of the stomach energy; all complaints concerning the stomach, pancreatitis, hepatitis and enteritis

Bladder 22 sān jiāo shù  – Approval point of the Triple Warmer

Yu Point Triple Warmer

Location: 1. 5 inches lateral of spinous process of 1st LWK

Sense organ: Tongue

Effect:  All complaints caused by malfunctions of the 3EW; condensation and hardening in the abdomen, indigestion, stiffness of the back and loins, chronic complaints in a combustion chamber, harmonizing juice balance and much more.

Bladder 23 shén shù  – Approval point of the Kidney

Yu Point Kidney

Location: 1. 5 inch lateral of 2nd LWK

Sense organ: Ears

Effect:  Stimulates all kidney functions; in all kidney complaints, weakness of the lower extremities and loins, lumbago, menstrual disorders, cold sensation, lower back pain, subluxation of 3rd and 4th lumbar vertebrae (according to Masunaga)

Bladder 25 dà cháng shù  – Approval point of the Large Intestine

Yu Point Large Intestine

Location: 1. 5 in. lateral spinous process 4th LWK, at the height of the iliac crest

Sense organ: Nose

Effect:  supports all functions of the colon energy; also for all complaints of the large intestine, lower back pain, menstrual pain

Bladder 27 xiăo cháng shù  – Approval point of the Small Intestine

Yu Point Small Intestine

Location: 1. 5 inches lateral of the 1st sacral vertebra (height of the first sacral hole – foramen sacrale)

Sense organ: Tongue

Effect:  All complaints affecting the small intestine; for pain in the sacrum, haemorrhoids, colicky abdominal pain, etc.

Bladder 28 páng guāng shù  – Approval point of the Bladder

Yu Point Bladder

Location: 1. 5 inches lateral of the 2nd sacral vertebra (height of the first sacral hole – foramen sacrale)

Sense organ: Ears

Effect:  Supports all functions of the bladder system; makes the back flexible, strengthens Qi vezicale, with abdominal pain, gynecological neoplasias, lumbo-sacral pain
